Trucks Carrying Pipe Sections for Arrow Irrigation Scheme, Otago, 1929

This photograph shows trucks loaded with large pipe sections and equipment heading into the Arrow Gorge during construction of the Arrow Irrigation Scheme in Otago, around 1929. The scheme began in the late 1920s to bring water from the Arrow River down to the Arrow Flats for irrigation of farmland, a major effort that involved laying kilometres of pipe and open water races to support local agriculture. Construction of intake structures and the main pipeline through the gorge kept gangs of workers and heavy equipment moving along rough roads, and images like this capture the industrial scale of the work underway.

The irrigation project, completed by about 1930, helped transform farming in the Wakatipu Basin by providing a reliable water supply through summer months and was part of a broader push at the time to improve rural productivity through engineered water delivery. The trucks full of pipe sections reflect the early motor-powered transport used to carry materials into rugged terrain, long before modern highway access was in place.
