The Unlicensed Driver: Dog at the Wheel, New York, c.1910

An early twentieth-century novelty photograph believed to have been taken in New York, showing a dog seated in an open motor car and dressed in period driving attire, including goggles, gloves, and a cap. The animal is posed with its paw resting on the vehicle’s bulb horn, a common feature of early automobiles. While clearly staged (we hope!), the image reflects the playful public fascination with the motor car during its formative years.
