Team horses pulling a plough on Waikawa farm Southland c.1895
Farming in the Waikawa district of Southland between the 1890s and 1920s was largely pioneering, emerging as native bush was cleared following the decline of local sawmilling. Small, family-run farms developed on this newly opened land, relying on horse-drawn ploughs and mixed farming practices, including sheep, cattle, and early dairy production. Conditions were demanding, with farmers facing heavy, wet soils, rugged terrain, and ongoing challenges such as pest infestations, particularly rabbits, which required government intervention.
