Steam Traction Engine and Chaff Cutter, Waikawa, Southland, New Zealand c.1890s
This photograph shows a steam traction engine operating a chaff cutter in the Waikawa district of the Catlins, Southland, during the 1890s. In this remote frontier region, traction engines were used to power agricultural machinery while horse and bullock teams handled hauling and transport.
At the time, Waikawa settlers were often both sawmillers and farmers, clearing dense native bush to establish pasture while supplying timber to coastal ports. Steam power played a key role in processing crops such as oats for chaff, supporting the gradual transition from bush milling to mixed farming in one of Southland’s most isolated districts.
