Portable Steam Engine and Threshing Mill, Hyde, Central Otago, New Zealand c.1899

This photograph shows a portable steam engine powering a threshing mill near Hyde, Central Otago, around 1899. Unlike self-propelled traction engines, these portable steam engines were drawn to farms by horses or bullocks and set in place to drive agricultural machinery via belts.

By the late 1890s, Hyde had become an important rural centre following the arrival of the Otago Central Railway in 1894. Farmers in the district produced large quantities of oats, wheat, and chaff, much of it processed using travelling threshing mills such as this before being transported by rail to Dunedin. The image documents the transition from manual labour to steam-powered farming while still relying heavily on animal power for transport.
