Oil Exploration operation, Waikaka, Southland, New Zealand, c.1912
This photograph shows an early oil exploration drilling operation in the Waikaka district of Southland, New Zealand, dating to the early 1900s. The rig shown is consistent with shallow cable-tool drilling, a method commonly used worldwide at the time to test for oil and gas.
During this period, oil exploration in New Zealand relied on surface geological observations and basic drilling equipment to investigate areas thought to contain sedimentary formations or natural seepages. Like many early exploration efforts across the country, testing in the Waikaka area produced limited “shows” of hydrocarbons but no commercially viable oil discoveries, reflecting the experimental and often unsuccessful nature of early petroleum exploration before modern geophysical techniques were developed.
