NZeta Motor Scooter Assembly, Auckland, New Zealand, c.1960–1963

This photograph shows the assembly of an NZeta motor scooter in an Auckland workshop during the early 1960s. NZeta scooters were locally assembled versions of the distinctive Czechoslovakian Čezeta, produced by JNZ Manufacturing (Jawa New Zealand) to meet New Zealand’s import and local-content regulations.

To qualify for reduced duties, components such as scooter bodies, exhausts, and chromed parts were manufactured or finished locally. Known in New Zealand as “the torpedo” for their long, streamlined front end, around 4,000 NZetas were produced before local assembly ended in 1963, when Japanese imports began to dominate the market.

Today, NZeta scooters are regarded as collectible symbols of New Zealand’s post-war manufacturing ingenuity.
