Glenorchy Motors Cars Lined Up for trip to Paradise, Lakes District, New Zealand, c.1930s

This photograph shows a line of passenger cars operated by Glenorchy Motors Ltd, in the Lake District during the early to mid-1930s. These vehicles provided transport for visitors travelling to Paradise, a remote and scenic area beyond Glenorchy, at a time when organised motor transport was opening up access to some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes.

The first car in the lineup is an Austin Six, dating from around 1934, followed by a mix of similar touring and passenger vehicles adapted for long-distance travel on rough alpine roads. With snow-covered mountains rising behind the small settlement, the image captures an early chapter in tourism around Queenstown, when journeys into the high country were an adventure in themselves.
