Fruit Lorries Loading Railway Wagons at Roxburgh Station, c.1920s–1930s

This photograph shows fruit lorries backed directly into railway wagons at Roxburgh railway station, illustrating a practical method used to move fruit from orchard districts to wider markets. Roxburgh was at the centre of Central Otago’s growing fruit industry, and combining road transport with rail allowed produce to be moved more efficiently from orchard to port and city markets.

Scenes like this reflect a period of transition, when motor lorries were increasingly used for local collection while railways still handled long-distance transport. The image captures everyday working life in the fruit-growing districts, where timing, handling, and transport were critical to getting fresh produce out of Central Otago.
