Caudron GIII Type Training Biplane Machine c.1918 Dunedin, New Zealand

This image shows a Caudron G.III–type training biplane operated in New Zealand during the late First World War period, most likely associated with the Canterbury (NZ) Aviation Company at Sockburn, Christchurch. While the original caption accompanying this photograph refers to a “100 h.p. ten-cylinder Anzani engine,” there is no evidence that Caudron trainers used in New Zealand were fitted with such a powerplant. Instead, contemporary records indicate these aircraft were powered by Anzani radial engines in the 45–60 horsepower range, consistent with training use.

The Canterbury Aviation Company, established in 1917, imported several Caudron G.III aircraft and also constructed locally built copies for pilot training. These machines were used extensively at Sockburn (Christchurch) and were typical of early flight school aircraft—lightweight, fabric-covered biplanes with modest power and simple controls. By 1920, as aviation technology advanced rapidly, these early trainers were retired, marking the end of New Zealand’s pioneering civilian flight training era.
