Boeing 40H -4 ZK ADX Dunedin Airport C.1935

Boeing 40-H-4 ZK-ADX was a Canadian-built example of Boeing’s successful Model 40 light transport biplane, constructed by Boeing-Canada in Vancouver in 1929. Designed for early commercial aviation, the aircraft featured a welded steel-tube fuselage with wood and fabric covering and could carry four passengers or freight. The Canadian-built aircraft were adapted for wheels, skis, or floats and were otherwise similar to their American counterparts. ZK-ADX was one of several ordered by New Zealand Airways Ltd for a planned Auckland–Invercargill service.

Arriving in New Zealand in July 1935, ZK-ADX was assembled and test-flown at Dunedin before operating briefly, logging only 14 flying hours before the airline entered liquidation. The aircraft was later sold and exported, continuing its working life in Australia and the Pacific in charter and freight roles. Its short New Zealand career reflects the challenges faced by early commercial aviation during the 1930s, when ambitious air routes often struggled against economic reality.
